UKM 2016 - Prof. Walter Stummer und Team

Faculty of Medicine of the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster

Full Professor (f/m) for Medical Microbiology, Clinical Infectious Diseases, (Experimental) Infectiology

The Faculty of Medicine of the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster, Germany, invites applications for 3 tenured positions:

Full Professor for Medical Microbiology
Full Professor for Clinical Infectious Diseases
Full Professor for (Experimental) Infectiology

With these parallel position openings, the Faculty strives to strengthen the research focus “Inflammation and Infection” and associated research areas, and patient care in the fields of infectiology, infectious diseases and infection medicine.

The Professor for Medical Microbiology will be the Director of the Institute of Medical Microbiology, part of the Center of Infection Medicine (together with the Institute of Virology, the Institute of Hygiene, and the new Department of Infectious Diseases). This professorship is expected to advance the Research in the fields of infection biology and pathogenesis of infectious diseases primarily caused by bacteria (and – if applicable – by other infectious pathogens excluding viruses). Broad expertise in diagnostic patient specimen analyses, covering the entire field of human infections (excluding viral diseases), is also expected. Applicants must be internationally recognized bacteriologists/microbiologists; and Board-certified
physicians for Medical Microbiology.

The Professor for Clinical Infectious Diseases will be the Director of the new Department of Infectious Diseases. Scientifically, applicants are expected to perform internationally competitive basic and/or clinicaltranslational research in the field of infectious diseases/infectiology. With respect to patient care, the emphasis will be on the establishment of a hospital-wide consultation service for all clinical inpatient and outpatient departments of the University Hospital, in close collaboration with the other institutes in the Center of Infection Medicine. In addition, the professor will head the hospital infection ward. Applicants must be Board-certified physicians for Infectious Diseases, or for Internal Medicine with the affix Infectious Diseases.

The Professor for (Experimental) Infectiology will head the Institute of Infectiology at the Center for Molecular Biology of Inflammation (ZMBE) (a joint institution of the Faculty of Medicine and the Faculties of Biology, Chemistry/Pharmacy, consisting of the Institutes of Infectiology, Medical Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Molecular Virology, Cell Biology, and associated research groups). This professor will perform up-to-date high-quality research in infectiology/infection biology with emphasis on the molecular interactions of medically important microorganisms with host cells, and on the elicited host response. Outstanding academic excellence is indispensable, however, this professorship does not include patient care.

We welcome applications from cooperative and interdisciplinary physicians and scientists, competent to successfully lead and inspire internationally competitive large research groups. Strong communication and management skills are necessary. For the clinical professorships, we further expect the ability to successfully deal with the competitive commercial aspects of a large University Hospital to ensure highlevel patient care as well as the economical success of the Department/Institute.

In addition to intensive cooperation within the Center of Infection Medicine and the Center for Molecular Biology of Inflammation, cooperation with the other Institutes and Departments and Research Units is expected. In particular, collaboration with the Interdisciplinary Center for Clinical Research, the collaborative research centers (CRCs) 1009 (Breaking Barriers), and CRC 34 (Pathophysiology of Staphylococci), with the Max Planck-Institute for Molecular Biomedicine, and with the interfaculty Excellence Cluster ‘Cells in Motion’ (CiM) is expected.

The appointments require a university degree as well as a lecturer qualification, or a positively reviewed junior professorship or equivalent qualification. The University of Münster is an equal opportunity employer and is committed to increasing the proportion of senior women academics. Consequently, we actively encourage applications by women. Female candidates with equivalent qualifications and academic achievements will be preferentially considered within the framework of the legal possibilities. We also welcome applications from candidates with disabilities. Disabled candidates with equivalent qualifications will be preferentially considered.
